Frances Knight, our Head of Department and Associate Professor in the History of Modern Christianity, is speaking at Middlesbrough Cathedral on Friday 30 October at the launch of Margaret Turnham's book, Catholic Faith and Practice in England, 1779 – 1992: The Role of Revivalism and Renewal.
Margaret was a PhD student with Frances from 2009-12, and this book is a revised form of her thesis. By focussing on devotional practices and grassroots Catholic communities in the north-east over a long period, Margaret argues that there are important points of similarity between Roman Catholicism and evangelical revivalism. The theology may have been different, but many of the underlying attitudes were the same and she challenges the notion of evangelical revivalism as an exclusively Protestant phenomenon.
