Postgraduate study trip to the Holy Land

Prof Roland Deines led a group of postgraduates on a study trip to the Holy Land from 22-29 March.

The fast pace of the tour was established during the first two days in Jerusalem, featuring visits to the Mount of Olives and Temple Mount, before the group headed south to Beer Sheva for the 2015 Deichmann Lectures, which Prof Deines curates. Two days of lectures and informal conversation from Prof Loren Stuckenbruck (LMU, München) offered inspiring food for thought, and the hospitality of the Ben-Gurion University was outstanding.

The tour continued via the Dead Sea, with stops at Masada, En Gedi and Qumran, up the Jordan Valley to Tiberias on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. This was the base for exploratory visits in the North, including Gamla, Tel Dan, Banias (Caesarea Philippi), and various sites around the sea itself. A final visit to Caesarea Maritima on the Mediterranean coast concluded the trip as the group headed home.

The tour was partly funded by travel grants from the School of Humanities Management and Research Office (SMRO) and Midlands3Cities (for students Tim Murray and Mark Wreford).
