Happy new year, and welcome back from the Department of Theology and Religious Studies.
We'd like to extend a warm welcome to our new teaching associate, Dr Ali-Reza Bhojani. Ali-Reza has a PhD in Islamic Studies from Durham University, and comes to us from the Mahdi Institute in Birmingham. He will be teaching with us until the end of January 2019, whilst our Associate Professor in Islamic Studies, Jon Hoover, is away on a highly prestigious British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship (congratulations, Jon!). With Jon away, Frances Knight is returning to her post as Head of Department.
In other good news, Professor Tom O’Loughlin has been elected to the Royal Irish Academy, a great honour – congratulations!
Finally, Conor Cunningham's work on the relation between evolution, theology and philosophy continues. In the wake of his multi-award winning primetime BBC2 documentary, 'Did Darwin Kill God?', his prize-winning, 600-page book 'Darwin's Pious Idea' has been translated into a number of languages including Korean, and Spanish. It has now appeared in Russian with a new 45-page afterword.
