Dr Klara Polackova Van der Ploeg presented her research on 13 September 2019 in Athens, Greece, at the 2019 Annual Conference of the European Society of International Law dedicated to the topic "Sovereignty: A concept in flux?"

Speaking on a panel dedicated to non-state actors, Dr Polackova Van der Ploeg presented her paper entitled 'The Functional Limits of State Sovereignty: Direct International Legal Rights and Obligations of Collective Non-State Entities'. She discussed how the emergence of rules of international law directly addressing entities such as corporations, armed groups and non-governmental organisations has impacted the concept of sovereignty in international law.
