Nottingham PhD graduate wins major book prize

Governance, Social Control and Legal Reform in China

Dr Qi Chen, who won the David Harris prize for the best PhD thesis in 2016 and now teaches at the University of Hertfordshire, has been awarded a major prize for a book based on her thesis. The Asian Criminological Society awarded her book Governance, Social Control and Legal Reform in China the society’s inaugural Outstanding Book Award.

In the foreword to the book, Professor Dirk Van Zyl Smit, who supervised the thesis along with Associate Professor Roisin Mulgrew, commented that the book was “a model of comparative criminological scholarship”.  He added that while it was particularly recommended for readers with a specific interest in China, it also contained insights into the rise of community sanctions as a global social phenomenon.

The School of Law congratulates Dr Chen on this major award.
