Dr Kattan - article published in The Melbourne Journal of International Law

Dr Victor Kattan's article "The United Kingdom's Views on Elections to the International Court of Justice during the Cold War" has just been published in The Melbourne Journal of International Law. The article was based on a paper Dr Kattan presented at a workshop organised by Hilary (now Judge) Charlesworth and Margert Young on National Encounters with the International Court of Justice. The article focuses on UK practice between 1946 and 1963 when new candidates emerged from the former European colonies in Africa and Asia. It suggests that British officials were informed by a ‘Cold War mindset’ that distrusted candidates from countries too strongly associated with the Soviet Union.

Other articles from the workshop, which include contributions from Hilary Charlesworth, Margaret Young, Judge Sir Kenneth Keith, Richard Rowe, Emma Nyhan, Shirley Scott, Bill Campbell, Natalie Klein, Tim Stephens, Karen Alter, Philippa Webb, Douglas Guilfoyle, and Henry Burmester, at the following link: https://law.unimelb.edu.au/mjil/issues/issue-archive/213
