Dr Aris Georgopoulos co-organised the GPPF’s “Chania Forum 2023” (3-4 November) in Chania, Greece. This year’s Chania Forum, entitled “The Russo-Ukrainian War and its Implications for Europe and Greece: Fin du Siècle?” explored the following main themes:
- International relations after the war in Ukraine (and the Middle East)
- The future of trade/economic “globalisation”
- The current challenges for the EU and its position in the emerging geopolitical jigsaw
- The prospects of the Greek economy
- The “rule of law” in the EU and in Greece
- The challenges and opportunities for the Greek Foreign Policy
Apart from co-hosting/co-organising the event, Dr Georgopoulos also discussed whether the war in Ukraine can be considered as a game-changer for the European defence and security industrial integration.
The Chania Forum 2023 featured a stellar line up of experts, practitioners, politicians/policy makers and scholars including current and former Ministers from Greece and overseas, Ambassadors, the former Director of the Greek Intelligence Service and Members of the European Parliament.
Dr Georgopoulos is one of the co-founders of the Greek Public Policy Forum (GPPF). The latter was established in 2011, in the middle of the economic crisis, by a group of early-career, at that time, Greek academics, from social sciences working mainly at Universities in the UK. It was founded as an informal forum aiming at facilitating dialogue and the incubation of new policy ideas and proposals for change in Greece and in Europe. The GPPF Chania meetings bring together in an informal setting distinguished scholars, practitioners, politicians, policy makers, journalists, from both Greece and overseas to exchange knowledge and ideas on topical issues.
