The Law Commission’s eagerly anticipated consultation paper on Evidence in Sexual Offences Prosecutions CP 259, published this week (www.lawcom.gov.uk/project/evidence-in-sexual-offence-prosecutions/) acknowledges the assistance and input of two School of Law academics, Professor Paul Roberts and Dr Matt Thomason.
Professor Roberts subsequently participated in a symposium hosted by the University of Sheffield on 26 May, which relates to a second Law Commission project on criminal appeals, currently at the pre-consultation stage: www.lawcom.gov.uk/project/criminal-appeals/. The Sheffield Symposium on Criminal Appeals was organised by Professor Chris Bennett (Philosophy), Dr Katherine Ebury (English) and Professor Richard Percival (Law), and featured a presentation by the Criminal Law Commissioner, Professor Penney Lewis, and her Law Commission colleague Robert Kaye. Professor Roberts joined Emeritus Professor Antony Duff (Stirling, Philosophy; Edinburgh, Law) as discussants on Professor Bennett’s scoping paper on Criminal Appeals and the Sovereignty of the Jury.
