Biography
I completed my Law LLB at the University of Leeds and my MA at the University of Nottingham. I have a PhD in Mental Health and Disability in International Law funded by the Institute of Mental Health. I was supervised by Professor Peter Bartlett and Emeritus Professor John Holmwood.
Expertise Summary
My PhD addresses barriers to CRPD compatibility for advance planning provisions. My key research areas include CRPD interpretation and implementation, mental capacity law in England and Wales, advance planning provisions and concepts of self and personhood from a mental health perspective.
Teaching Summary
I teach Land Law and Introduction to Law and Legal Theory. I also teach Mental Capacity Law on the Mental Health Law and Policy Module.
Research Summary
Research Projects:
I have done research on behalf of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Committee (CRPD) on jurisprudence for a flagship report on achieving the sustainable development goals; I have worked on the PHRAME project with Dr Petra Gronholm (Kings College London) on prioritising the rights of persons with mental health difference for the purposes of stakeholder implementation; and have assisted the World Health Organisation in updating and maintaining their online database 'MINDbank.' I also helped prepare a response to the governments white paper 'Reforming the Mental Health Act' alongside colleagues at Nottingham Law School.
Events:
I co-organise the postgraduate seminar day on 'Mental Disability Law' in partnership with the biennial Mental Disability Law Conference at the Institute for Mental Health.
I have previously organised a monthly seminar series for the Centre for Mental Health and Human Rights at the Institute for Mental Health, where we covered the following topics:
- Addiction, Causes, Consequences and Societies Responses (co-organised with Ms Danielle Watson;)
- "Workfare Conditionality and Benefits Terrorism - a Kill or Cure Alembic?" on the welfare system, austerity and its impact on mental health;
- "A panel session on good practice when researching people with disabilities and people with mental health difference;"
- 'Mental Health on the Front Lines,' a look into Nottingham's Police Street Triage Team and their impact on the treatment of people with mental health difference;
I have hosted panel sessions for the Leeds Access Committee on Disability Law and Social Care Inadequacies and hosted a select committee panel session for Women and Equalities on the topic of 'Spared Space' with Professor Anna Lawson at the University of Leeds.

I sit on the panel for the Mental Diversity Law Network (MDLN) and am a member of the Social Legal Studies Association. I am also founder and member of the Social Justice and the Law research group at the University of Nottingham Law School.
