Renal Medicine

We are happy to host academic trainees at all levels of Academic Clinical Fellowship as well as Clinical Lecturers, in addition to research attachments for Academic Foundation year trainees.

Research opportunities

We have internationally recognised clinical research programmes in:

  • Acute Kidney Injury
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Dialysis
  • The effects of kidney disease on muscle structure and function

Cutting across these disease areas is an imaging theme, applying novel imaging techniques such as MRI and contrast-enhanced ultrasound to answer clinically important research questions.

We lead major multicentre trials in AKI and CKD (e.g. AFiRM, MOSAICC and NURTuRE) with opportunities to experience and work on specific elements of these, as well as detailed mechanistic studies, for example characterising AKI recovery using:

  • biomarkers
  • continuous glucose monitoring in dialysis
  • developing technology for continuous intradialytic blood pressure measurement
  • use of new technology (e.g. motion capture suit) to assess physical functioning
