Social, cultural and national identities

The disintegration of multinational states, ethnic conflict, and sometimes turbulent political, social and economic transition in the aftermath of the Cold War have led to an increased interest among scholars of Russia and Eastern Europe in a study of identities. Contrary to popular perceptions, events in the region have not been driven by ancient ethnic conflicts. The coexistence of different cultures, and social and ethnic groups has had a major impact on the historical development of the region. The interplay, fluidity and diversity of social, cultural and national identities is crucial for an understanding of peoples and societies of Eastern Europe and their relationship with the rest of the world.

Research on Social, cultural and national identities includes:

  • ethnic conflict and cooperation in former Yugoslavia
  • post-conflict reconciliation
  • the construction and destruction of identities by the state
  • image of the 'other' in film and literature
