Regions, centre-periphery relations

Study of Russia’s regions and relations between centre and periphery have become increasingly prominent in recent historiography. In studies of the contemporary world, the emergence of large regions within Russia as centres of gravity for political and international power, and the changing relationship between these emerging regions and the centre are critically important factors currently at work within Russia. For historians, it has increasingly been recognised that regionally specific study of the former Soviet Union offers new perspectives and enables a more precise and complex picture of the past to emerge.

Research on regions and centre-periphery relations includes:

  • experiences of the Russian revolution in Russia’s provinces
  • cultural representation (and creation) of Soviet space
