Nutrition in Wound Healing
Resource to help raise awareness of the role of nutrition in wound healing
Multidisciplinary Team Approach - Social Services
Social Services can be essential in reducing malnourishment. Some of the ways in which they may assist include:
- Providing assistance in shopping or cooking.
- Providing financial assistance. Living on a low income can limit a patient's ability to buy food. Raising awareness of any benefits that may be available will provide more finances to buy a healthy diet.
- Providing aids to assist in preparing or eating meals. Some individuals may not be able to handle knives and forks (Kemp, 2001), and so may benefit from an occupational therapy referral to address this. Others who have breathing difficulties may also require equipment such as a high stool so that they can sit in the kitchen preparing food without getting out of breath standing too long.
- Physiotherapists may be able to provide exercises or aids to increase mobility. This may enable the individual to shop independently, or enable the patient to prepare meals more easily.
