Second year MPharm student Gladys Maponese has been chosen to represent the University of Nottingham and pharmacy on the U21 UNMDG student committee.
This is one of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (UNMDG) projects in the Health Sector and the initiative is being developed by the Universitas 21 Health Sciences Group. Their purpose is to enable academic institutions that train health sciences students to develop an educational strategy on MDG training and education for health professional trainees.
The specific objective of the U21 UNMDG Student Committee is:
- to raise awareness of the UNMDGs among health sciences students in U21 universities, making sure they visualize the correlation of the UNMDGs with the determinants of health, public health, and globalization. This can be facilitated through the distribution of the U21 mdg4health student guide or through the organization of workshops, lectures, debates, etc.
- to motivate and inspire fellow students to take action in local projects towards the achievement of UNMDGs
- to share UNMDG/community initiatives that are happening in your universities with the rest of U21 universities
- to advocate for the inclusion of UNMDGs in health sciences curriculums in your universities
- to stimulate the interest and action in carrying out relevant research pertaining to the UNMDGs in your universities
- to advocate for the creation of joint U21 service learning experiences in developing countries
