Teresa Matini
Teresa Matini, who undertook her PhD under the supervision of Professor Cameron Alexander and Dr Giuseppe Mantovani in the Division of Drug Delivery & Tissue Engineering, has been awarded an EPSRC Doctoral Prize. This competitive scheme, funded by the EPSRC and awarded by the University of Nottingham, aims to increase the impact of a recently completed PhD in terms of publications, knowledge transfer and outreach activities as a first step to an independent research career.
Through the prize funding, Teresa will extend her work on nanoscale smart polymer systems to develop “green” stimuli-responsive materials as nanocarriers or biosensors for healthcare applications. The aim is to use sustainable and industrially applicable chemistry to generate new potential medicines for breast cancer therapy. She will be based in Dr Keith Spriggs’ laboratory in the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences where she will gain experience of key biological models and assays. She will also collaborate with the School of Chemistry, the Nottingham Nanotechnology and Nanoscience Centre and the Department of Chemical Engineering.
The project aligns with the overarching ‘Bench to Society’ vision of the School to develop medicines for difficult to treat diseases, cancer being a specific focus. The prize consists of a fully funded two year postdoctoral position.
