Rob Hampson
A Postgraduate Research student from the School of Pharmacy, Robert Hampson, recently competed in 'I'm a Scientist - Get Me Out of Here'. The competition seeks to be a fun way to help young secondary school students engage with real scientists so that they can find out more about scientists and see how science really works inside the lab.
Rob (supervised by Dr. Weng Chan and Prof. Paul Williams and funded by the MRC DTP) competed with four other scientists in the Antibiotics Zone. This zone saw over 31,000 page views reaching over 560 students from 18 different schools in three different countries. Over the course of the two week competition, there were 25 live online web chats with school classes where students could ask all their questions, thus creating 7,964 lines of live chat responses from the competing scientists. Students also submitted questions for more detailed answers by the scientists generating 861 answers. After two weeks of grilling the scientists, the students’ votes were counted and Rob won second place, being narrowly defeated in the last eviction.
Rob had a great time answering students' questions and would heartily recommend the competition to other scientists. The next competition is due in March 2015, for more information on the competition or if you would like to get involved, please see the website: http://imascientist.org.uk/
