On Saturday 11th March UoN PharmSoc hosted quite possibly the first competition of its kind, a sports tournament run solely by pharmacy students, for pharmacy students. Sponsored generously by LloydsPharmacy/Celesio and supported by the BPSA, the very first LloydsPharmacy Sports Tournament was attended by a range of university pharmacy societies from across the country including Keele, Lincoln, and Hertfordshire (not forgetting Nottingham!). The tournament saw the different societies compete in Football, Netball, Badminton and Hockey competitions with the victorious society winning the chance to take home the LloydsPharmacy Sports Shield, along with the bragging rights!
Held at the University of Nottingham’s very own David Ross Sports Village, the afternoon saw some fantastic displays of sporting action from every society involved. The Nottingham/Keele hockey showdown finished in a comprehensive Nottingham win, despite the best efforts of their fearless Staffordshire counterparts. The badminton competition saw a similar story, with the home side topping the table after seeing off fierce competition from both Keele and Hertfordshire. Netball was a different story; despite the Nottingham girl’s best efforts they couldn’t compete with a tactically brilliant Lincoln side. The latter emerged the winners of the East Midlands derby to deservedly take home the Netball trophy. However, it was perhaps the football that ultimately provided the most dramatic moment of the tournament, with the afternoon coming to a climatic finish which ended in Nottingham beating a valiant Keele side in a nail-biting penalty shootout. With UoN PharmSoc finishing 1st in three of the four sports, the LloydsPharmacy Sports Shield was theirs to be lifted for the very first time.
On behalf of all of us here at UoN PharmSoc, we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved on the day whether you came along to play, help out, or even just show your support. Considering this was the LloydsPharmacy Sports Tournament’s first year we feel the afternoon was an overwhelming success, and we are all looking forward to seeing some of you again next year to find out if Nottingham can retain their title! Next year’s hosts are yet to be determined, but discussions are underway and UoN PharmSoc will be sure to provide an update as soon as this is confirmed. In the meantime feel free to have a look at our website, www.uonpharmsoc.co.uk , or follow us on Facebook (@UoN PharmSoc Sports) to find out more.
