Biography
Matthew is a qualified pharmacist, having received his MPharm degree in 2007 from the University of Nottingham. His master's project was carried out within the Laboratory of Biophysics and Surface Analysis (LBSA) and focused on the surface characterization of drug eluting polymeric stents. He subsequently completed his professional pre-registration training at the University Hospital of North Durham, and continued to work as a clinical pharmacist before returning to the LBSA in 2008. Here he completed a PhD under the supervision of Professors Clive Roberts, Morgan Alexander and Martyn Davies in conjunction with 3M Healthcare. His work involved characterizing the scale and impact of adhesion forces between active pharmaceutical ingredients in pressurized metered dose inhaler formulations. In 2011, Matthew began work for Tesco Pharmacies, looking to expand his experience in both clinical healthcare, operational and commercial management.
Matthew returned to the University in 2013 to combine his skill sets and lead the commercial activities of the Interface and Surface Analysis Centre (ISAC). The Centre works to generate and improve the interface with industry and external academia to make it easier for them to access UoN materials characterisaiton facilities. In so doing this provides a source of income to help facility sustainability. Having grown the Centre and it's breadth of operations, he is now the Head of Commerical for the operation and forms part of the management structure within the Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre (nmRC). Key responsibilities include the development, co-ordination and advancement of external business opportunities, management of the active business portfolio, and strategic development of industrial research opportunities.
