Our graduate Krupesh Hirani (BA Politics 2007) has been selected to receive the University's Alumni Laureate Award (Recent Graduate) 2013. The Awards are given to University of Nottingham alumni in the UK and throughout the world who have made outstanding contributions to their community, have stimulated new ideas and services and have shown exceptional dedication, creativity and leadership. Since graduating, Councillor Hirani has developed strong hands-on experience in politics (not for profit, private and party political); working with the Labour Party at their headquarters under the Campaigns Team Unit, campaigning for the British Youth Council, working for Barry Gardiner MP in the House of Commons, and being on the Parliament and Government Programme at the Hansard Society. He was elected as a Councillor to the London Borough of Brent in May 2010. He has since taken the position as Lead Member for Adults and Health on the Executive of Brent Council. In joining the Local Authority's cabinet in 2012 at the age of 26, he became the youngest Cabinet Member at local government level in the country. His outstanding achievement and leadership in politics and charity work represents a role model for young generation and for those with black and minority ethnic background in their great potential to contribute to society.
