Wealth, Power and Authoritarian Institutions

Congratulations to the School of Politics and International Relation's Dr Michaela Collord on the publication of her new book Wealth, Power and Authoritarian Institutions: Comparing Dominant Parties and Parliaments in Tanzania and Uganda (Oxford University Press).

The book seeks to explain how authoritarian regimes' diverse development trajectories shape their contrasting institutional landscapes. It details the political economy origins of contrasting authoritarian party types, whether more institutionalised and cohesive or personalised and factional.

Michaela has a specialist interest in the history and politics of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly east Africa. Her research expertise include urban politics, urban labour informality and labour organising.
