This week sees the publication of a new piece by Professor Sue Arrowsmith which maps the topic of procurement in sport organizations. The piece appears as a chapter in the third edition of the classic work by the late Trevor Slack (edited by Terri Byers and Alex Thurston), Understanding Sport Organizations , in a new section on contemporary issues, which explores new and neglected subjects in the field.
Procurement is critical to the success and reputation of sporting events from the Olympics to local competitions. It is also central for securing sport facilities for the public and to the day to day work of sport federations, and is more important than ever with the increased focused on sound governance in sport. However, this subject has previously received little academic attention.
This new chapter helps to fill the information gap by providing a map of the field. It also contributes significantly to the aim of the third edition of the book of highlighting the importance of a multi-disciplinary perspective for studying and managing sport organisations.
