Research and evaluation aren’t always the first things that are associated with PRIMIS, but we have a long and illustrious history in providing services for academics. That wealth of experience, however, allows us to pass on our knowledge and skills with one recent example being the workshop held at the annual Society for Academic Primary Care (SAPC) conference in Brighton this summer. Dr Sarah Rodgers, PRIMIS’ Head of Research Services, and Dr Dai Evans, our Lead Clinical Adviser, hosted a very well received workshop for attendees on using primary care data for research purposes. We’ve placed the digital flyer created for this event which you can view or download: Research and Evaluation Services flyer (PDF) We’re proud to have collaborated with academic colleagues across many institutions on impactful research and, as PRIMIS is part of the University of Nottingham, we operate as a cost recovered service. One recent research and evaluation project we’ve undertaken has been a feasibility study aimed at improving anti-osteoporosis medication (AOM) prescribing and adherence across eight GP practices in the Oxford area. Working with the Oxford Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) and the University of Oxford, PRIMIS produced a search tool with a dashboard (GRASP-Osteoporosis) to highlight patients at high risk of fragility fracture. With the accompanying quality improvement resources, GP practices were able to access online resources and quarterly calls with the local secondary care lead. The study demonstrated increases in AOM prescribing and adherence (an additional 252 patients started AOM), reduced variability of AOM use between the practices, as well as better coding of fractures (QOF fracture coding increased by 20.8%). Oxfordshire AHSN commented: “It has been a positive and productive experience working with the knowledgeable PRIMIS team... The support provided by PRIMIS in running a pilot with GP practices across Oxfordshire was a key component in the project success.” Read more on PRIMIS’ Research and Evaluation Services at: Services
