Blog post #3, December 2023
This one-day event hosted by the Health Foundation and PRIMIS brought together colleagues from the Q community to hear about our experience of using a learning health system approach to implement a pharmacist-led intervention to reduce medication error in primary care (PINCER). The event also provided an opportunity for PRIMIS to showcase its work and how it enables the intelligent use of primary care data for the NHS, academics and industry partners. Q community colleagues represented a broad spectrum of senior NHS roles, showing the importance of quality improvement in the healthcare environment. Far from being static the day included active breakout sessions and encouraged participation and questions from all attendees. We were delighted to have Professor Tony Avery, Professor of Primary Care and National Clinical Director for Prescribing, jointly present an overview of PINCER with our own Head of Research Services, Dr Sarah Rodgers. Presentations were also given by Tom Hardie and Nell Thornton-Lee from The Health Foundation and PRIMIS’ Managing Director, Kerry Oliver. Breakout sessions were divided into three round-table lively and engaging discussions, which all attendees were able to participate in. These were: Data and technology led by PRIMIS’ Lead Clinical Adviser, Dr Dai Evans together with Dr Sarah Rodgers; Learning communities led by PRIMIS Business Implementation Lead, Tony Panayiotidis; Improvement led by Kerry Oliver. The event provided attendees with the opportunity to reflect on quality improvement approaches in their own organisations and share their experiences of using data to learn and improve the services they deliver. Everyone agreed it was a great day and many thanks to the Health Foundation for organising such an inspiring event. More information about the visit can be obtained at: https://q.health.org.uk/about/ A ‘QVisit’ is seen as an opportunity to learn how organisations inside (or beyond) the health and care sector support change and improvement. Attendees are encouraged to take that learning and apply it in their own area of work. It is of some consequence that PRIMIS has been chosen as an example organisation for such a visit. The Q community, delivered by The Health Foundation, is a community of UK and Ireland professionals, clinicians and academics who collaborate to improve the safety and quality of healthcare.
