Most people experience multiple adverse events in their lifetime. Although the burden and negative consequences associated with multiple exposure are well-documented, the potential for growth in such contexts is less well-known. This talk will present findings from a series of studies that have examined and explored factors that may act as barriers or facilitators of growth among survivors with adverse event history. The findings indicate that growth for some people may have illusory qualities, yet for others could represent tangible and transformational changes. More research is needed to understand the nuances of growth in response to cumulative adversity, and how practitioners should respond appropriately.
