Manufacturing Metrology Team

Integrated metrology 10-year roadmap for advanced manufacturing (MetMap)

Grant: EP/R513507/1
Funding: EPSRC
Duration: April 2018 – April 2020
Team:  Richard Leach

The objective of this project is to carry out a roadmapping exercise that will pave the way for the development of a systematic approach to integrated measurement and control for advanced manufacturing systems, to identify and guide opportunities for commercialisation of early research, and to define necessary future research themes across the MTRLs.

Integrated metrology, and the resulting levels of control in advanced manufacturing, will allow UK manufacturing industry to gain a competitive advantage through enhanced energy efficiency, productivity and increased market attractiveness. The MetMap roadmap will help to shape the High Value Manufacturing Catapult’s (HVMC’s) activities in integrated metrology, drive creation of new activities and identify commercial opportunity. The HVMC is uniquely placed to take the fundamental research developed in the EPSRC fellowship of the PI at the University of Nottingham (and elsewhere) through to commercialisation in industrial systems.

The project will involve four tasks:

  1. data gathering, involving visiting all 7 HVMCs, interviewing key staff (at HVMC and its key commercial partners) and attendance at targeted conferences/events.
  2. running two UK-based conferences in integrated metrology for conventional and additive manufacturing respectively.
  3. conducting an on-line survey on the state-of-the-art and requirements for integrated metrology in UK advanced manufacturing industry.
  4. the publication and dissemination of a 10-year roadmap for integrated metrology in the HVMCs and UK industry.
