Biography
Dr Andrew Batchelor completed his undergraduate studies at The University of Queensland in 2002. After graduating he was employed as a Graduate Metallurgist by a commercial laboratory that provided metallurgical testing services at laboratory and pilot scale to the Australian mining industry. He then took a position as an Academic Assistant in the Department of Mining and Mineral Processing at the University of Queensland where he provided laboratory services and was involved with academic administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
In 2005 he took a Research Associate position at the University of Nottingham. While working on AMIRA and subsequent research projects in microwave processing of ores, he completed his PhD part-time, earning the award in 2012. He is currently a Research Fellow pursuing industrial scale-up and ongoing fundamental research in microwave processing of ores for industrial sponsors and a member of the Advanced Materials Research Group (AMRG).
Expertise Summary
Dr Andrew Batchelor combines core mineral processing expertise with microwave system design to provide microwave technology aimed at improving mineral processing operations around the world. Integral to the process is testing and evaluating standard and novel comminution and recovery technologies in conjunction with international collaborators to determine the best way to exploit microwave technology in the mining industry.

Dr Andrew Batchelor's primary role is research in the design, testing and evaluation of microwave processing of minerals and ores, with other research interests in general microwave processing of materials. Integral to the research is the development of value benefits for microwave processing in the mining industry.
Past Research
Earlier roles at The University of Nottingham have included participation in many projects and several research interests including:
- Froth imaging and dewatering of coal preparation fines
- Regeneration of road and pathway trench excavation material
- Dust management in dry processing of minerals
Future Research
Future research interests focus on developing pilot and industrial scale microwave systems for application in the mining industry underpinned by continued fundamental understanding of microwaves and their interactions with ores.
