Teaching Summary

My teaching currently includes the following courses:

  • Quantitative Physics (convenor, undergraduate, 1st year core)
  • Research Techniques in Astronomy (undergraduate, 4th year intensive block)
  • Scientific Computing with Python (postgraduate MPAGS module)

I am manager of the School's telescopes, responsible for the ongoing development of this facility and training of undergraduate users. I run several third year undergraduate projects each year using the telescopes, including "Eclipsing binary stars", "Observing minor planets" and "Distances to stellar clusters".

I supervise one or two fourth-year undergraduate research projects each year. Recent titles include: "Hierarchical Bayesian modelling of galaxy scaling relations", "Galaxy kinematics versus Galaxy Zoo morphology", "Spiral arms and the localisation of star-formation", "The effect of dust on measurements of galaxy structure", and "Disk galaxies versus environment".

As part of a role developing e-learning and e-assessment within the school, I sit on the the Faculty of Science Digital Learning Committee.
