Expertise Summary

I am the Student Welfare Manager for Sutton Bonington campus based in the Vet School.

My responsibilities within my roles are:

  • Act as central dissemination point for all school welfare issues to ensure that students in need or crisis are dealt with tactfully, sensitively and confidentially, sign posting students to appropriate support when necessary;
  • Work closely with relevant academic staff within the academic schools to devise strategy and implementation of a school welfare plan for students;
  • Provide advice and support for students with routine day-to-day problems advising with reference to University policies and procedures;
  • Identify unusually complex issues and refer students as appropriate to University professional Support Services;
  • Advise students and colleagues on the validity of Extenuating Circumstances claims, including providing evidence for claims and addressing welfare issues arising from claims;
  • Liaise with, and provide advice to, academic and APM colleagues in the school on matters relating to pastoral support;
  • Provide training for members of staff in issues relating to student support and induction for new tutors;
  • Develop effective working relationships with colleagues in other areas of the University such as Counselling;
  • Proactively seek new ways of identifying and supporting students who are experiencing difficulties such as attendance patterns, monitoring assessment performance, and follow-up action;
  • Develop effective working relationships with other Student welfare Officers, joining a community of practice coordinated by Student Services;
  • Hold regular drop in sessions for students needing guidance, in order to provide ongoing, accessible and visible welfare focal point and to identify students who need help before they reach crisis point liaison closely with personal tutors;
  • Brief new students during Welcome Week on pastoral support available within the school and from external parties;

Have an overview on disability issues for the school, ensuring that the support needs of students are identified and met. Ensure students are referred to the University Disability Team as necessary:

  • Provide support and guidance to disabled students, seeking the support of the Disability Team as appropriate;
  • Promote good practice and ensure that the school complies with the DDA and University policies and practices;
