Is US policing our of control? Guardian event discusses the role of race in policing in the US and UK

On Tuesday, 24 November at 7pm, The Guardian is hosting an esteemed panel of experts in London to discuss the Black Lives Matter movement, particularly its global reach, and issues of policing in the US. Does UK policing exhibit the same problems? The event is open to the public and tickets are still available on the Guardian website.

Christopher Phelps, associate professor and C3R associate, will participate as the only scholar in a panel of journalists and writers that includes the lead writer of The Guardian Hugh Muir as well as Oliver Laughland, the senior reporter for The Guardian US. Christopher researches the radical history of the US and frequently appears as an expert on BBC and LBC to contextualize mass shootings, the controversial Confederate flag, and US gun laws.

The event comes out of an investigative project by The Guardian titled The Counted, which is considered the most reliable record of fatal police violence in 2015 due to the fact that the US government itself does no keep comprehensive records for the killings of African Americans by the police.
