US Founder of Black Lives Matter in Ground-Breaking Visit to Nottingham

Alicia

C3R joins with the Black Lives Matter Nottingham chapter to host Alicia Garza and other leading US and UK activists

On Sunday 22nd May 2016, Alicia Garza, one of the three founding members of the global Black Lives Matter movement, will be visiting Nottingham from the United States. She will be joined by Cherrell Brown (Sadie Nash Leadership Project) and activists from Sisters Uncut and Matters of the Earth. The aim of this historic visit is to build and work with local activists, who have formed the first Black Lives Matter chapter in Europe. The  Black Lives Matter Nottingham Activist Group began meeting in the wake of our October Dialogues: Black Lives Matter conference in October 2015. After building its action clusters, it recently launched to a full house at Nottingham Contemporary with a screening of the once banned film, Injustice. The Chapter is being closely followed by activist groups across the globe and has attracted the attention of BLM founder members who offered to come and support the development of the Chapter and the UK BLM movement. C3R is honoured to have supported the work of BLM Nottingham in becoming the first European chapter, joining the 30 that exist in cities across the US.

Nottingham Activist, Aaron Calladine said: "This is a very special moment in the history of Social Justice. This groundbreaking movement being in Nottingham has extra significance as Nottingham has a long history of activism. I am so proud that my city is part of a global movement that is standing up to the specific injustices that Black People experience.”

17 year old Cara Thompson, also from the Nottingham group, said: “It is exciting to get the opportunity to co-facilitate this event and to build with one of the founding members of #BlackLivesMatter as well as other important activists of our time. I believe a city that really does place a value on Black lives will improve the city for all citizens.”
