The UNCLC (University of Nottingham Commercial Law Centre) has set up a new student placement programme at the World Bank Group Insolvency and Debt Resolution Team and ran a pilot internship in September-December 2020 with the support of Steve Vaccarini and Faculty Placements. This World Bank Group team has until now only run their placement partnerships with US and Canadian universities other than a partnership with Oxford University a number of years ago. The placement opportunity as expected proved very popular and was whittled down to a shortlist in March this year. Six interviews took place, and Margaux Seeuws (LLM Law) was eventually selected as the successful intern though a joint decision by UNCLC and the World Bank Group. Read Margaux’s blog where she talks about this fantastic placement opportunity and what she took from the experience.
Professor Irit Mevorach from the School of Law, Co-Director of the UNCLC and former Senior Counsel at the World Bank Group has commented on this pilot internship:
“Working with the Insolvency and Debt Resolution Team at the World Bank Group has provided our intern with a unique opportunity to be involved in hugely impactful and interesting activities, such as standard-setting, diagnostic work, and technical assistance to governments around the world. This work has direct effect on countries' legal regimes. It helps improve the credit environment and the efficacy of insolvency systems around the world. We were delighted that we could offer such opportunity to our LLM students. The selection process was robust and included written applications, short-listing, and interviews held jointly by the School of Law and the World Bank team. The pilot which concluded recently was very successful. Notwithstanding the constraints imposed by the pandemic on travel, our intern had a full and rich experience during this placement.”
Faculty Placements Manager Steve Vaccarini noted “ We are so pleased with how this pilot has worked out, and the feedback from both Margaux and her supervisors at the World Bank has been really positive. We hope to replicate this placement opportunity for 2021, and depending on the covid-19 situation, envisage this taking place (as originally intended) at the Washington DC headquarters of the World Bank!”
