The Nottingham Arbitration Talk held by the Commercial Law Centre on 17 March 2021 was a great success with 90 participants tuning in to the online event from across the world.
We were honoured to welcome Professor Sir Roy Goode who argued in his keynote address that arbitration as a dispute resolution procedure inevitably affects the parties' substantive rights. Angeline Welsh from Essex Court Chambers talked to us about arbitration's unexplored potential in resolving business and human rights disputes. Timothy Foden from Lalive discussed the legitimacy crisis of investment treaty arbitration and the intricate connection between this crisis and resource nationalism. Dr Martins Paparinskis from University College London argued that investment treaty arbitration belongs to the realm of public international law and emphasised the importance of international law concepts in investment disputes.
The fascinating talks generated a great discussion with the audience. The Centre was delighted to welcome students, academics and practitioners from many different jurisdictions as participants at the event.
