I have held Professorships at Royal Holloway University of London, Universities of Leeds and Sheffield, and have been Dean of Learning and Teaching of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Leeds. I have also held 3 Fellowships at the University of Cambridge. My research interests are wide-ranging, and I have written nearly 100 publications on aspects of English language and literature from Old English to the present-day. Currently my obsessions are stylistics, rhetoric, Northern English dialectology and the discourse of spiritualist mediums. Books include a 'Dictionary of Stylistics' (2nd edn 2001) (Longman); 'Personal Pronouns in Present-day English' (Cambridge University Press 1996); 'The Language of James Joyce' (1992) (Macmillan); 'A Social and Cultural History of Northern English' (2006) (Cambridge University Press) and the joint editing of ' Shakespeare's Dramatic Language: A Reader's Guide' (Arden, 2000); also 14 anthologies of poems, stories and jokes for children. I am currently working on the 3rd edition of the 'Dictionary of Stylistics'.
