Review paper on thermal sprayed functional and smart coatings

An extensive review on functional and smart coatings produced using thermal spraying deposition methods has been published in the Journal of Thermal Spray Technology. The work, written by PhD student Daniel Tejero-Martin in collaboration with Milad Rezvani Rad from the University of Alberta, Canada, has been published as "Open Access", being available for everyone to read here.

In this review an overview of the different deposition methods present within thermal spray, and how they have been applied in the development of novel coatings is presented. Functional coatings, defined as having a passive, integrated, new functionality beyond the traditional protective capabilities are investigated based on their applications. Smart coatings, on the other hand, aims to provide an active response to certain stimuli, generated either by intrinsic or extrinsic events.
