The Horn Dance
Dr Lila Matsumoto has written an essay for BBC Radio 3, commissioned as part of the Weird England essay series which explores unusual customs and traditions from all over Britain.
The essay beautifully explores the ancient annual horn dance of Abbotts Bromley in Staffordshire, where local men dance through the village carrying stags' horns on their heads. Lila was born in Japan, though the Midlands has become her home, and this essay deftly compares English and Japanese cultural festivals, as well as illuminating experiences of immigration within England.
