Theatre and Residual Culture
Chris Collins’s book Theatre and Residual Culture, considers how Irish playwright John Millington Synge used the almost forgotten culture from pre-Christian Ireland to criticise the orthodoxy of the Catholic Church in the Ireland of Synge’s time. The book is based extensively on research into Synge's and his colleagues’ unpublished diaries, notebooks and journals, and it has been reviewed as ‘the most important volume on Synge to be published in decades’.
Chris launched Theatre and Residual Culture at the Irish Society for Theatre Research conference that the School of English hosted at the University of Nottingham in April 2017.
