School of English current PhD student Annalise Grice has won a highly sought-after fellowship to attend the prestigious 13th International D. H. Lawrence conference. This year’s conference will be held at Gargnano, Lake Garda, northern Italy in late June. This major conference is organised by the D. H. Lawrence Society of North America; the last one was held in Sydney in 2011. Annalise competed with PhD students from around the world to win her Fellowship. She is delivering a paper at the conference on Lawrence's early work as a reviewer, entitled 'That'll help perhaps to advertise me': Lawrence's 'The Georgian Renaissance' review in Rhythm'.
Of this fabulous achievement, Annalise said: "I'm delighted to be awarded the opportunity to meet so many international Lawrence experts at an early stage in my research; their feedback on my paper, and gaining new insights into the most current research in the field, will help to shape my thesis. The Fellowship offers a unique chance to visit one of the places that meant a great deal to Lawrence and which stimulated his creativity as a newly professional writer." Dr Andrew Harrison, who is one of Annalise's supervisors in the School of English, expressed delight at her success: "Annalise is an outstanding student who has contributed a great deal to the activities of the School's D. H. Lawrence's Research Centre over the past two years. This is a fitting acknowledgement of her abilities and all her hard work."
Annalise is currently in the first year of her PhD studies, writing a thesis on Lawrence's early writings and the literary marketplace. She has already read a paper at a conference on Katherine Mansfield at Birkbeck, University of London, in November 2013.
