The Place-Names Committee of the Kent Archaeological Society and the Centre for Kent History & Heritage are hosting a conference, 'Exploring Kentish Naming Practices', on 17 Nobember 2018.
The one-day conference includes papers on place-names, personal names and tavern names, including two papers by Dr Paul Cullen, the Kent editor of the Survey of English Place-Names. Paul will be giving two papers, 'Tavern names of Kent' and 'Some tricky Kent surnames'. Attendees are encouraged to email suggestions of tricky surnames for Paul to consider to anitathompson503@gmail.com. Dr Mark Bateson will also be talking about the practicalities of working as an English Place-Name Society research assistant in his paper 'Place-names from the sources: editions, transcriptions and excerpts'.
The conference will also include a paper by Dr Eleanor Rye, 'Place-names and travel in early medieval Kent', drawing on her work on the Travel and Communication project, and papers by Dr Barrie Cook ('Names, trades and places on the tokens of 17th century Kent'), Margaret Lawrence ('Promoting Peckham Village Place Names') and Dr Sheila Sweetinburgh ('Pigs, pannage and place names in medieval Kent').
