Dr Victor Kattan, School of Law, University of Nottingham will discuss “Chapter 3: Apartheid as a regime of racial domination”, which is part of his ongoing book project, Apartheid as a Crime against Humanity.
A regime of racial domination refers to a particular structure of government. The word ‘regime’ refers to a political system in which multiple crimes against humanity must be perpetrated to constitute the crime against humanity of apartheid. This Chapter explores the system of racial domination that was developed by Afrikaner nationalists following the conquest of various African kingdoms by the British Empire and the mass migration of indentured labourers from South Asia. These demographic changes contributed to the development of a multicultural society that was anathema to Afrikaner nationalists who, after winning the 1948 elections, passed legislation furthering racial segregation, employing voter suppression techniques, and engineering urban and rural demography. The apotheosis of the National Party’s racial policy was ‘separate development’ that aimed to entrench European domination through the physical partition of South Africa into separate self-governing African homelands.
The aim of this seminar is to gather together in a relaxed and supportive setting to discuss ongoing research within the HLGC, as part of our goal of promoting and encouraging each other in this research area.
