The Early Writings of D. H. Lawrence and the Literary Marketplace
This AHRC-funded project focuses on the early literary career of D. H. Lawrence. It concentrates on his works up to the publication of Sons and Lovers in May 1913, the end of the author’s self-proclaimed “youthful period”.
Drawing on the outstanding Lawrence collections in the University’s Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections, it will read the prose fiction (1906-13) and poetry (1897-1913) alongside non-fictional essays such as ‘Art and the Individual’ (1908) in order to examine the author’s influences and his initial exposure to, and negotiation of, the literary marketplace.
