Simon de Montfort the elder
As part of this year’s Everybody’s Reading Festival in Leicester, Claire Taylor will be talking about Simon de Montfort the elder, who headed the Albigensian Crusade (1209–29), a campaign to eliminate religious heresy in southern France.
A ruthless and determined man, he had been driven from his English lands by King John, and sought the county of Toulouse instead. The crusade massacred Cathar heretics and their supporters, apparently indiscriminately. Claire argues that this actually increased support for the heresy in the region, until the arrival of the medieval inquisition.
The event, which will be held at the Secular Hall, 75 Humberstone Gate, Leicester LE1 1WB, is free and open to all – just turn up.
