With the digitisation of creative industries, there is increasing interest within the HCI community in understanding how creators make use of online technologies for various purposes. Our studies explored how both traditionally published and DIY authors of different statuses make use of social media to build and maintain their online identities. The findings reveal that the existing technology better serves the publishing industry’s management of their authors’ online image, than the authors’ direct management. There are underlying tensions when authors use social media themselves, as they employ different techniques to balance the boundaries of different aspects of their identities online. Taking into consideration authors’ behaviours we are now conducting a study exploring opportunities for the transformation of social media to attention optimisation and audience management tools that could better support them in curating their online identities.

Touchscreen user interfaces have become popular in all sort of consumer products. Avionics industry gained considerable interest in integration of touchscreens in flight deck environments. Research conducted in the area of Human-Computer-Interaction identified many advantages from a human factors and manufacturing standpoint. However, touchscreen technology is not the ultimate solution for input devices in aviation. Things that works well in consumer applications does not work properly or are not safe enough for safety critical operations.

In cooperation with avionics experts and pilots a framework was constructed, which served as a base for qualitative and quantitative research. In this talk the framework of my PhD thesis will be introduced and research investigating environmental factors (e.g. inflight vibration and g-force) will be presented.
