Martin Flintham will present an intriguing real-life tale of digital provenance and its uses to the lab.
In this talk I will talk about experiences of finding instances of contract cheating - soliciting bespoke coursework solutions - in student coursework as part of my teaching activities. I will discuss how a lengthy examination of use of a freelance market place and document metadata, subsequently represented with the W3C-PROV standard, enabled me to build a probable "prosecution" narrative of the provenance of a student's coursework submissions, ultimately exposing a premeditated and significant attempt to gain an unfair academic advantage.
