Description

This week we will hear two talks from William Preston and Chaoyu Ye.

William Preston - Increasing the usefulness and artistic opportunity of Artcodes

A brief overview of the extensions to Artcodes (formally Aestheticodes) I’ve worked on and projects that used them.

Chaoyu Ye (Kelvin)

IR research has moved from singe query-url pair to session-based data. Although there is much research into session-based retrieval, there are typically based on datasets where the logs of each user’s web history were simply divided by fixed periods of inactivity, such as 5, 15 or 30 minutes. While, the real web activity (such as multitasking) is far more complex than the simple activity model (one-by-one task and break after each task). As a result, finding out a better to determine session based on the natural web logs is a key to better research quality in IR.

My PhD project thus focus on the human behaviour that indicate changes between sessions, which provide insight into how to more effectively identify coherent session with the consideration of more factors involved, such as behavioural markers than simple time gaps. This is the research methodology: a) find out user's mental model of session determines (First Year), 2) generate corresponding practical rules to these theoretical principles (Second-Third, Year), 3) integrate these practical rules and develop a chrome extension with this algorithm embedded (Second-Third Year). The final outcome will be a taxonomy with session determine rules and a chrome extension with session-determine algorithm embedded.
