The EPSRC – which funds much of the MRL’s research – now expects that “Published research papers should include a short statement describing how and on what terms any supporting research data may be accessed.” This reflects the Research Councils’ view that publicly funded research data is a public good, which should therefore be of benefit to everyone. But what about HCI research data? What challenges does it present? When and how should we make it available? What should we put in our data access statements in new publications? What should we ask participants to consent to? I’ll present my current thinking, including a proposed risk/benefit model for deciding what data to publish and how to publish it.
