This talk is an update on my PhD work, which aims to understand the social character of metadata in contemporary music making practices. I will present the findings from three ethnographic studies of different music production scenarios, to identify and explore the creation and social uses of production metadata. The PhD project also aims to use the learning gained from these studies to further explore the potential value prospects from capturing and exploiting this metadata in novel metadata-driven applications, to benefit both music producers and consumers.
I will present the "Living Room of The Future" project. A collaboration between the MRL (Andy's Fellowship), BBC R&D and FACT with funding from the British Council. An Interactive theatre performance in your living room – Taking advantage of the hyper-connected nature of our homes to provide new experiences through next generation broadcasting techniques without compromising the privacy and security of personal data. Using Object Based Media and Databox, the project explores the limits of what is possible when broadcast media reaches out to engage with and respond to other objects in the home. The experience stretches out into the living room and beyond, creating bi-directional, immersive and social experiences for a family or household of people.
