Frail older people (including those with dementia) and their families

One of the great successes of modern healthcare has been its contribution to the extension of life expectancy, particularly in the developed world. Most deaths now follow an extended period of ageing with progressive degenerative co-morbid conditions and progressive frailty.

Increasingly, older people experience conditions such as advanced dementia, in which there is a loss of mental capacity. This demographic transition constitutes one of the major public health issues of our age. It increases demands on the healthcare resources and expertise and impacts on the ways in which individuals anticipate the future and their relationships with those around them. Informal carers play a critical role in supporting frail older people throughout complex trajectories of declining health, extending increasingly to end-of-life care.

Our research explores the experience of giving and receiving care involving frail older people, including those affected by dementia and cognitive impairment, and how this can be improved for patients and their families in all healthcare settings.
