Current Research

We have recently completed a James Lind Alliance (JLA) Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) that identified the top ten research questions in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) as decided by the CF community (People with CF, their family and friends and the health care professionals who care for them). I am now working on a new next step to this - co-production of clinical trials to answer these questions in collaboration with the CF community. Due to the cross infection risk, patients with CF are unable to be in the same room. Therefore much of our patient engagement activity occurs online, through our successful twitter handle @questionCF or by videoconferencing.

Alongside leading on the JLAPSP in CF, I undertook a systematic review to identify evidence gaps and uncertainties in treatment decisions for CF. This feed in to the PSP work allowing identification of any questions of which the answer was already known.

I also contribute to Cochrane Systematic Reviews in Cystic Fibrosis.

Past Research

Previously I was involved in a project at HMDS at St James Hospital in Leeds using next generation sequencing and SNP arrays to characterise early genetic markers of leukaemia in morphologically normal bone marrow. This will hopefully lead to earlier diagnosis & identification of patients at high risk of disease progression.

Prior to studying medicine I was a research scientist in the field of immunology. My PhD thesis and post-doctoral fellowship involved investigating the role of the hedgehog morphogens and their downstream signalling molecule Gli2 in thymocyte development and T cell activation. Understanding how the immune system develops and responds in different environments can aid in understanding of immunodeficiency, autoimmunity and tumour survailance.
