The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) describe a broad spectrum of conditions that are commonly referred to as ‘myositis’. IIMs are rare rheumatological autoimmune conditions which can lead to inflammation in various parts of the body, but mainly the skeletal muscles, skin, lungs and heart. It can be seen in association with an underlying cancer. Lung inflammation causing interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a common complication.

This is a collaborative project between the RECORDER team and Dr Jen Hannah, Dr Patrick Gordon and Dr James Galloway at King’s College London

Aims

The first aim of this project was to validate whether ICD-10 codes within hospital episode statistics are a valid method of identifying cases of IIM and associated ILD and develop methods to improve the accuracy of this process in order to facilitate future research.

The follow up aims were to use cases of IIM identified through this method to investigate the impact of age, sex, socioeconomic deprivation and ethnicity on incidence and mortality.
