Biography

I am a veterinary surgeon and qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1987. Since 1991 I have worked in dermatology, both in clinical practice and research. I have worked in private referral practice, for the Animal Health Trust and more recently in academic practice at both the University of Liverpool and here at Nottingham. From 2020 I have slowly increased my time at the UON whilst continuing in referral practice which forms part of the small animal track rotation. After a year working part-time in the pharmaceutical industry providing specialist support I remain an advisor to several veterinary pharmaceutical companies. I was co-editor on Veterinary Dermatology for over 3 years.

Throughout my career I have played a major role in the skin health of Guide Dogs and regularly visit to provide advice, treatments and to support policies for the best welfare and management of their cases.

I hold the RCVS Certificate and Diploma in Veterinary Dermatology and am a RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology. My PhD, completed in 2000, is titled The immune response in canine atopy: hypersensitivity to house dust mites [Dermatophagoides spp] led to the first objective description of the role of genetics in canine atopic dermatitis.

My clinical and research interests overlap on the related themes of canine atopic dermatitis and otitis externa.

In teaching, both in the clinical setting as well as in lecture and other formats, I hope to demonstrate my great love for my subject to inspire the next generations of vets - who will all see many dermatology cases - as well as sparking that particular interest that might lead to wanting to become a veterinary dermatologist.
